Media Literacy: Gendered Pathways in a Digital Future?

Smartphones, computers, consoles and tablets change the daily lives of adolescents all around the world. Why do adolescents use media? How do adolescents perceive online risks and chances? What role do parents and teachers play in the media use of adolescents? Which aspects of media use promotes adolescents’ well-being, academic achievement and future aspirations? These questions were empirically investigated in the project “Media Literacy” in which 1018 adolescents (52% girls) aged 12 to 16 years participated. Analyses show that all questions need to be answered differently for boys and girls. Boys differ regarding their motives to use media, are more able to detect online risks and capitalize online chances, perceive their parents’ behaviour differently and report higher levels of well-being in the internet compared to girls. The presentation will discuss some implications of these gendered pathways in a digital future and will give suggestions for future research.
